GlaxoSmithKline featured in LD+A Magazine

The Lighting Practice is happy to share that GlaxoSmithKline’s Philadelphia Navy Yard offices has been featured in the June 2014 issue of LD+A magazine.  Michael Barber, Principal, and Stephen Hoppe, Project Manager, were interviewed for the article.

GSK’s new building, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA) with interior spaces designed by Francis Cauffman, showcases a state-of-the-art flexible office environment and sustainable design strategies.  The company and their 1,300 employees relocated from a traditional 800,000 sq. ft. office building to their new 220,000 sq. ft. headquarters in the Philadelphia Navy Yard.  GSK’s new flexible environment has allowed them to reduce their footprint by 75 percent and increase their employees’ productivity and positive work experience.

The open and transparent design of the building begins with the glass curtain wall and continues throughout the building, this made daylighting a significant factor when designing the lighting system for the building.  The Lighting Practice was responsible for designing a lighting system that would use daylight, lower power consumption, and provide a comfortable environment for GSK’s employees to work.  The Lighting Practice’s scope included all interior spaces with the exception of the atrium.  GSK’s lighting consumes 25% less power than allowed by code and the project has received LEED Platinum Certification for both the “core and shell” and the “interior space”.
