Three TLP Projects Take Home 2018 Preservation Achievement Awards!

The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia has honored three projects on which The Lighting Practice was part of the design team. Alden Park, Hill College House and the Sterling Apartment Homes each received a Grand Jury Award at the 2018 Preservation Achievement Awards.

Each year, the Preservation Alliance presents the Preservation Achievement Awards to recognize projects throughout the Philadelphia region that exemplify outstanding achievement in historic preservation. The Grand Jury Awards celebrate the highest level of achievement in historic preservation for one of the following:

  • Preserving/protecting historic resources in the built environment
  • Historic building restoration, rehabilitation, or adaptive re-use
  • Sympathetic new construction or additions associated with historic properties
  • Education or advocacy efforts related to historic preservation
  • Documentation of significant historic resources in the built environment

Alden Park is the former home of actress and Philadelphian Grace Kelly. In a project led by Barton Partners, the historic residential complex underwent two years of renovations and modern upgrades. TLP provided concept lighting design services for the residential tower’s public spaces, pool house and fitness center, amenity spaces, and new exterior pool. Warm, white light sources were used throughout to give the spaces new life. When necessary, new lighting was installed to complement the existing decorative elements. LED light sources help reduce energy and maintenance costs.

Hill College House is a six-story masonry dormitory designed by Eero Saarinen in 1960. The building, equipped to house nearly 520 students, emulates a self-sufficient village. The design team modernized the dormitory while honoring Saarinen’s “college house” design that marries small living spaces with community areas. In collaboration with Mills + Schnoering Architects and Floss Barber Interior Design, TLP designed a lighting system for Hill College House’s amenity spaces, exterior façade lighting, and pedestrian site lighting. The new lighting system was designed to LEED Silver certification standards.

Built in 1961, The Sterling Apartment Homes offer 535 apartments as well as ground-level retail, three stories of office space, and a parking garage. The design team, led by Barton Partners, was tasked with bringing a modern aesthetic to the outdated building. The Lighting Practice’s scope for the 29-story building included illuminating the entry canopies and retail promenade, ground-level façade, rooftop pool deck and social deck, and fitness center. Glowing entry canopies welcome residents and guests into both entries. At the retail promenade, lighting was replaced to provide more intense illumination on the walkway while accenting the ceiling with decorative dropped collars on recessed downlights. On the rooftop decks, dimmable lighting built into the guard rail and cabana system minimizes fixture appearance.

The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia is a nonprofit organization that highlights Philadelphia’s historic places and promotes “… appreciation, protection, appropriate use, and development” of them. The honor of receiving a Grand Jury Award represents the design teams’ hard work is preserving the historic beauty of these buildings while modernizing their amenities.
