The Lighting Practice is pleased to announce that the Lehigh University Chandler Ullmann Hall Renovation was recognized by the 2020 AIA Pennsylvania Architectural Excellence Design Awards and received a Merit Award in the Preservation Architecture category.
Chandler Ullmann Hall, A Catalyst for Renewal, is a memorable historic masonry building at the center of Lehigh University’s campus in Bethlehem, PA. Originally one of the first collegiate chemistry buildings in the country, it is now home to the Department of Psychology and the Department of Math providing classrooms, faculty offices, and laboratories for both programs. A challenge for the design team, led by MGA Partners was the building’s existing layers of infrastructure, added over the years to support modern amenities. The design team improved circulation corridors for key building spaces and new infrastructure pathways (ductwork, wiring, devices, and lighting) that respect the character of the original building.
Emad Hasan, Principal of the NY Office, and Chris Hallenbeck, Project Manager, carefully designed the lighting system to support the modern classrooms and respect the building’s history. When possible TLP preserved the historic fixtures retro-fitting them to support LED sources.
Congratulations to MGA Partners and the design team on this successful project.
