The Lighting Practice is pleased to announce that the University of Rhode Island Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering was recognized by the AIA Rhode Island 2020 Honor & Design Awards and received an Honor Award in the Commercial Architecture: Higher Education category.
Led by Ballinger, the newly constructed 5-story center for engineering replaced five existing buildings on the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus. The new interdisciplinary hub contains active learning labs, research labs, classrooms, and capstone studios. The Lighting Practice’s Helen Diemer, Principal, and Emad Hasan, Principal NY Office, worked closely with Lillian Knoerzer, Project Manager and lighting designer’s Jacob Cogley and Angela Banner to design an interior and exterior lighting system that supports the collaborative and flexible nature of the building and showcases the building’s distinct architecture. TLP’s team strategically placed interior circulation lighting along the building’s periphery emphasizing the visible truss support. A glowing wrapped stair threads through the center of the building physically and visually connecting common areas, classrooms, offices and creating a focal point within the building’s glass transparent structure.
Congratulations to Ballinger and the design team on this successful project.
