At its recent 2016 Design Awards Gala, AIA Philadelphia honored the spectacular transformation of the historical Temple-Tifereth Israel into the Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center at Case Western University. MGA Partners received AIA Philadelphia’s Honor Award: Built (Preservation) for its extraordinary transformation of the building.
The design team, led by MGA Partners, redesigned the former synagogue into a place for music, theater, lectures and other cultural programs that enrich and inspire the community. The Lighting Practice was tasked with updating the building’s lighting system while preserving the historic ambiance of the early 20th century architecture. Refurbishing the historic lighting fixtures involved replacing incandescent sources with warm white LEDs. The result was a stunning preservation of the historic ambiance while reducing operating costs.
