American University needed a new building to enhance its Life Sciences programs. The 123,000 SF building offers research laboratories, classrooms, and faculty offices for the Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, and Environmental Science departments. This building’s addition supports the University’s growing student base and curriculum. The design team’s goal was to visually connect the new and existing buildings to create a cohesive design across campus, adhering to the university’s building standards, while also bringing new design ideas. The Lighting Practice provided lighting design services for the interior and exterior, in accordance with LEED Gold standards. Strategically illuminating the interior promotes collaboration in flexible learning environments, enhances wayfinding, and reinforces school pride through branding.
