Johns Hopkins University’s new 4-story medical education building was designed to enhance the faculty’s ability to teach 21st century medicine. The architecture emphasizes transparency and openness, with spaces for formal training and informal gatherings in response to the university’s goal of creating a place where the fertile exchange of ideas can occur in and outside of the classroom. Lighting is used strategically throughout the building to direct circulation and highlight meeting zones. The divisible auditorium features dimmable fluorescents with multi-scene preset controls to accommodate a variety of teaching configurations. The facility’s warm glow is created with energy efficient, easy to maintain fluorescent and compact fluorescent sources.
