The Intensive Care Unit, floors 11 and 12 at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, underwent interior renovations to support its patients, families, and staff. The Lighting Practice provided lighting design services for all common areas such as lounges and corridors to accommodate visitors and family by using light to create a calm and welcoming experience. Corridors utilize wall grazing and cove lighting within seating areas to balance natural and electric light and create an uplifting ambiance. With a focus on patient comfort and staff wellbeing, a circadian lighting system is utilized in patient rooms and nurses’ stations. At the nurses’ stations, color temperature changes from cool blue to warm amber throughout the day to support nurses’ internal circadian rhythm who are working overnight shifts. Doctors and nurses can override lighting presets above patient beds for examination. Additionally, patient rooms have a color-changing system for patients to customize lighting. Customized lighting lifts patient spirits and distracts them from the healthcare environment.
