The Downtown Market is a mixed-use facility that incorporates all aspects of local food production, from growth in the large greenhouses on the second floor to distribution in the “open air” market, and education about local produce in public test kitchens. With sustainability in mind, the market includes a green roof, live walls, geothermal wells, rain gardens, and many other innovative features. To meet the challenges for adaptability and energy-conscience lighting, The Lighting Practice used to track with LED retrofit lamps for the majority of the market lighting. Energy efficient fluorescent sources are used in office and support areas throughout. The Market is LEED Gold-certified, the first LEED-certified market in the nation.
