The Lighting Practice was part of the project team that completely replaced all vertical circulation within the monument’s stone pedestal and created life-safety egress paths across the pedestal’s terreplein and through the walls of Fort Wood. Two new stairways, a new passenger elevator and associated landings were wrapped within the narrow 6-level pedestal giving visitors new views of the monumental steel anchorage designed by Gustave Eifel. TLP used concealed LED and compact fluorescent lighting sources to reveal the textures and forms of the historic structures and to facilitate visitors’ enjoyment of their trip through architectural history. TLP used concealed LED luminaires to relight the pedestal’s exterior and to create a lighted exit pathway across the terreplein.
