As part of their master plan, the University of Rhode Island constructed a 5-story, 190,000 SF center for engineering replacing five existing buildings on their Kingston campus. The Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering is the College of Engineering’s new interdisciplinary hub. The building contains active learning labs, research labs, classrooms, and capstone studios. The Lighting Practice was responsible for designing the interior and exterior lighting systems. TLP strategically placed interior circulation lighting along the building’s periphery to emphasize the truss support system which eliminated the need for columns along the central span. A glowing wrapped stair threads through the center of the building connecting common areas, classrooms, and offices. This detail is reiterated in elevator lobbies with backlit ceiling panels. Recessed linear fixtures used in common areas support the open interiors throughout the building.
